This is def not my first detox rodeo. I'm sure there are people who can be totally perfect with their diet all day, every day. But I really believe in living my life, and sometimes that means having a little too much sugar or one too many drinks. Like, you can't always be stressing what you're putting into your body, right? I think the key to living healthily long-term is giving yourself a little break now and then.

My four go-to foods that detox your body

Before I get into this, I just want to say that water is SO IMPORTANT when you're trying to detox. Water is literally your body's way of flushing things out, so make sure you're drinking plenty of it.

Also, while you're detoxing, make sure you steer clear of processed foods and sugar, too. This just gives your body less work so it can focus on getting rid of any leftover gunk.

#1: Garlic

As far as foods that detox your body, garlic is such a powerhouse. It's antibacterial, antibiotic, and antiviral, for starters. Plus, it helps your body make white blood cells, which helps you fight infections. Garlic also helps with blood pressure and cholesterol levels and protects your liver, basically giving you a way to undo any bad food/drink choices you made last week.

On top of all that, garlic helps your body make glutathione, which helps it filter out toxins from your digestive system.

Raw garlic is better for detoxing than cooked garlic. I like to add it to my LSF salad dressings or mix it into some hummus to help cut the taste a bit.

#2: Lemon

Lemon is seriously so good for you. Squeeze it over your salad or bowl, add it to your water, use it to marinate your meat — basically, you can work lemon into your diet super easily and it's one of the best foods that detox your body.

Lemons have a bunch of antioxidants, which protect your cells against oxidative stress, which can lead to a whole bunch of health issues, including cancer. In short, antioxidants help to keep you healthy even if you haven't made the best food choices recently. Also, because they're alkaline, lemons can help your body get back to the right pH balance, making it way easier to detox.

#3: Artichoke

Artichoke also has a bunch of antioxidants (the most of any vegetable, actually), plus they have a ton of fiber. As fiber moves through your body, it sort of acts like Drano, picking up all the junk and moving it along and out of your system. If you're looking for foods that detox your body, high-fiber foods —like artichokes — are a great way to go.

Plus, I love artichoke when I'm feeling snacky. Eating a whole artichoke takes a while so you feel like you're munching on something but you're not eating a whole ton, and you're getting plenty of health benefits with it!

#4: Ginger

Ginger's a no-brainer to add to the list of foods that detox your body. If you're feeling a little bloated after going big during the holiday, ginger can help you out. It's great for your digestion and definitely helps to reduce belly bloat. And because it supports your digestion, it helps your body's natural detox processes along. Plus, it's an anti-inflammatory and it has a ton of antioxidants, too.

Other foods that detox your body include:

  • Beets
  • Leafy greens
  • Cilantro
  • Turmeric
  • Avocado

Work more of these into your diet and you'll be feeling great in no time.
